Kroger, Albertsons release list of Southern California, U.S. stores to sell in merger

LOS ANGELES (CNS) — Kroger and Albertsons on Tuesday released a list of 579 stores that will be sold under a proposed megamerger between the two grocery giants, including 63 locations in California.

The vast majority of locations in California are located in Southern California.

According to Bloomberg, Kroger’s CEO sent a memo to employees at all affected stores informing them of plans to split the locations into other areas.&S Wholesale Grocers If the merger goes through. It is expected that all employees will be able to keep their jobs with C&S, officials said.

The merger is facing a challenge from the Federal Trade Commission, which alleges the proposed $24.6 billion merger would lead to higher food prices by limiting competition in the market and could negatively impact workers.

Kroger has denied such allegations, insisting that no stores, distribution centers or manufacturing facilities will be closed, and claiming that “customers will benefit from lower prices and more choices” through the merger.

The United Food and Commercial Workers union, which represents grocery workers, issued a statement Tuesday saying it continues to oppose the merger.

“Today’s announcement changes nothing,” the union said. “The merger is not done yet, quite the opposite. We remain focused on stopping the proposed megamerger for the same reasons we have been saying since it was first announced more than 20 months ago—because we know it will hurt workers, hurt shoppers, hurt suppliers and communities, and it is illegal. The attorneys general of Colorado and Washington and the Federal Trade Commission rejected the proposed merger in January and February. We applaud their actions. They have had the proposed divestiture list, which the companies announced today, for months, and that has not changed their opposition to the proposed merger. These legal challenges to the proposed merger are moving forward, with hearings beginning in late July and scheduled to continue through September.”
