Who remembers Gamescom giving out awards? Yes. At the end of each event, the show hands out awards to all eligible games at the show in Cologne. One of these categories is “Best Nintendo Game,” which has been around since 2012. However, the award won’t be handed out this year as the organizers have cancelled the award for 2024.
The playerThe Sun, which reported on the story, contacted Gamescom organizers about the decision to cancel the award, and their response revealed that there were “very few entries” for the category. Here’s the full brief:
““There were very few entries for the Best Nintendo Switch category this year. So the awards committee has decided to cancel this category.”
To be eligible for a prize at Gamescom, which starts tomorrow (August 20), your game must be at the event. Additionally, you must also submit your game for a prize, and depending on how many games are submitted, There is an application fee.Since Nintendo has already confirmed that it will not be present at the show, the above response is expected.
However, that doesn’t mean there won’t be any Switch games at Gamescom 2024: Little Nightmares III and Civilization VII have been confirmed, and we’re sure there will be plenty more on the show floor. So a combination of Nintendo’s absence, developers prioritizing other awards, and possibly no major Switch titles in 2024 means this year’s award is off. Well, there’s always next year…
Nintendo Dominates Gamescom 2023 AwardsBut with a game that had already been released: a minigame called The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom (since it was playable at the show, it was eligible for awards). It won five awards, including Best Gameplay, Best Nintendo Game, and Most Awesome.
But the big news from the show was certainly reports that the company showed off demos of the Switch successor to the press behind closed doors. Additionally, some rumors pointed to a Breath of the Wild demo running at 4K and 60fps on the Switch successor.
