China’s ambassador to France said on Friday evening that countries of the former Soviet Union do not have “sovereign states”. Ukraine was inevitably in that spot. He was drastically reshaped by Beijing. The EU has been reassured, but Russia wants to “recalibrate” its strategy towards China, which it wants to engage with its “cause”.

DMytro Kuleba, Ukraine’s foreign minister, warned his colleagues in EU countries on Monday. We should not expect a single general counteroffensive by Ukrainian forces – but the initial objective is maintained: to restore the entire Ukrainian territory within its internationally recognized borders since 1991, Crimea understood. It is this “sovereignty” and this “territorial integrity” of the former Soviet republics that Beijing officially said Monday it respects… prompting a sharp rebuke from its ambassador in Paris.
