Did the discovery of “memory” change everything?

German, Portuguese and British authorities on Tuesday began new excavations near a dam in southern Portugal in an effort to advance the investigation into the disappearance of British woman Madeleine McCann 16 years ago.

At the request of German authorities, Portuguese police finally called off the search on Thursday. The judicial police noted in a press release that since 2020, the British woman is believed to be dead and Christian Bruckner is suspected, and “collected material will be handed over to the German authorities.” He has already been jailed in his country for rape in Portugal.

A “memorial”

The Daily Mail offers a justification if the investigators did not reveal why they were re-excavating. At the same time, it was in this same place that a retired British couple discovered a “memory” of little Maddie seven months after she disappeared.

“Our daughter was walking in front of us, and suddenly she shouted something to us: Hurry, come and look! Someone must be dead here. When we arrived, we saw a row of stones protruding into the water. On the last stone was a bouquet of fresh white lilies. As we approached, We also found Madeleine’s photograph among the flowers. There was no announcement. Everything was very strange. When we found it, had someone throw Madeleine in the water here and come back and make a monument to her? », Ralph explains.

After their shocking discovery, Ralf and his wife contacted the Portuguese police, but got no response. Only three years ago, when Christian Bruckner became the prime suspect in the case, the German police became interested in information from the two Britons.

International campaign

Model McCann, nearly four years old, walked out of her room at a hotel complex in Praia da Luz, a small seaside resort in the Algarve, on May 3, 2007, while her parents were having dinner with friends at a nearby restaurant.

Her disappearance sparked an extraordinary international campaign led by Kate and Gerry McCann to try to find her. Photos of little Maddy, with her light brown hair and big clear eyes, went around the world.

After 14 months of contentious trials, notably marked by the indictment and subsequent acquittal of the couple, a Portuguese judge closed the case in 2008, before reopening the file five years later as “new elements” emerged.

After studying the case for two years, the United Kingdom officially launched its own investigation in July 2013, but since then the German track has allowed only real progress.

On May 12, the 20th anniversary of Maddie’s birth, her parents, who say they still have no evidence of her death, posted a new message on social media, calling on the public to continue to help in the search.
