Bus carrying 40 primary school children falls more than 6m, pupils in ‘absolute emergency’

A school bus accident in Corps (Isère) on Saturday morning injured 14 people, including two adults, during a return trip from a summer camp to Grenoble station, the department said in a new statement.

The bus took primary school children to Grenoble station for an after school trip organized by the municipality of Hautes-Alpes, Scags (Hautes-de-Seine).

“The results of this accident included 2 adults classified as complete emergencies (driver and passenger) and 1 adult and 11 children as relative emergencies. All the victims are being attended to and evacuated to hospitals as per the condition of the victims,” the province’s press release said.

The provincial government said there were a total of 6 adults and 40 primary school children on the bus.

The crash, which involved only one bus, occurred around 8:45 a.m. on National 85, known as Route Napoleon, according to the same source.

The press release did not describe the circumstances of the crash, but a photo from regional newspaper Dauphiné Libéré showed the vehicle in a ravine after going off the road.

“The diversion of the children and their partners is being set up by the organizer of the accommodation” and in the meantime, the town hall of the corps has arranged for an emergency accommodation, the provincial council said.

National transport was cut off and the province asked motorists to “avoid the area so as not to disrupt emergency services”.

According to the same source, a large rescue organization comprising 90 sappers has been put in place, supported by two civil defense helicopters based in the department.

According to France 3, the children and their companions were returning from a skiing holiday at the Saint-Michel-de-Chaillol family resort in the Hautes-Alpes.

Contacted by AFP, the city’s holiday center declined to make any comment.

The Route Napoléon, a very steep national road connecting Grenoble and Gap, is known for its dangerous nature, with frequent fatal road accidents, including one that claimed the lives of 26 Polish pilgrims in July 2007.
