Richard Simmons’ cause of death has been confirmed.
Fitness guru Lenny Simmons’ brother has revealed that the star died last month at the age of 76 due to “complications from a recent fall and heart disease.”
Simmons family spokesman Tom Esty said Lenny “received a call from the Los Angeles County coroner’s office” Wednesday morning. People’s Magazine.
“The coroner told Lenny that Richard’s death was accidental due to complications from a recent fall and heart disease as a contributing factor. The toxicology report came back negative except for the medications the doctor had prescribed for Richard,” Esty continued.
“The family would like to thank everyone for their love and support during this time of great loss,” the family spokesman added.
Simmons was found dead on July 13, one day after his 76th birthday, by his housekeeper, Teresa Revels.
The detection was confirmed in Interview with people Simmons had a fall on July 11. The next day, on his birthday, Simmons refused to seek medical help.
Revels recalled telling Simmons, “Let’s go to the hospital. You might have broken your leg.” She said, “No, Teresa. Not on my birthday. Why don’t we wait and do it in the morning.”
“But in the morning it was too late,” she said.
Revels told People magazine she believes Simmons died of a heart attack.
Before her interview, The Washington Post confirmed from the Los Angeles County Medical Examiner’s Office that Simmons’ cause of death had been deferred and was pending investigation.
Revels said Simmons was unable to play sports or teach fitness classes before his death. He had undergone knee replacement surgery and needed another surgery, she added.
According to Revels, Simmons told her in 2014 that he could no longer jump and “I think it’s time for me to stop.”
“When he told me that, I thought, ‘He’s kidding. He can’t do that,’” Revels said. “But he said, ‘I want to be Richard. If I’m not going to be Richard…’ You know, celebrities say, ‘The day I can’t be myself, I have to stop working.’ And that’s why he did it.”
A private funeral was held for the fitness trainer in Los Angeles on July 19 for his family and closest friends. He was buried at Pierce Brothers Westwood Village Memorial and Mortuary.
