Why is the plus size section in the back of Target?

A popular TikTok user posted a viral video showing where her local Target store displays its plus-size clothing section, sparking a discussion in the comments.

Video posted by Tik Tok Samira (@Samira) has garnered over 490,000 views. In the clip, she walks into the clothing section of Target, passing through several aisles and the sale section until she reaches the plus-size fashion section.

“Where are the plus sizes? Literally behind this wall here,” Samia says. “They said the plus sizes should go in the back.” The plus size section also faces away from the front of the store, she explains.

She has previously posted videos criticizing Delta Air Lines for its standard seatbelt size and retailers like Forever 21, Victoria’s Secret Pink, H&M, Old Navy and FashionNova for not offering extended sizes, and calling for more size inclusivity.

Where does Target stock plus size clothing?

While Target’s layouts vary from place to place, other viewers have noticed that their local retailer also keeps plus-size clothing separate from regular-size clothing.

“The way they combine pregnancy and motherhood into my goal is diabolical,” one says.

“They’re really trying to force us to work out all for the clothes, aren’t they? They’re like, ‘You’re going to work out whether you like it or not,’ like, ‘Bro, let me get my size,’” another wrote.

Others say location isn’t the only problem with Target’s large-format displays, but size as well.

“Oh my god. This is crazy. But why did I just realize how small the plus size section at my local store is. It’s a tiny little aisle and that’s it. Still in the back…” one commenter shared.

“Tell me why my target has half a wall of plus size clothing,” says another.

“But this section seems bigger than my goal. The mime only has about 3 shelves,” wrote a third.

Hidden message? Some viewers think so.

Other viewers suspect the retailer is putting plus-size clothing in the back as an insult to shoppers, telling them to “walk more.”

“I always say they put us in the back corners to make us walk more,” says one user.

“See how they wanted us to tread our path? Very considerate, very polite,” another joked.

Retail workers share insights

Retailers explain why there’s a plus-size section in the back, and others share what they can do to combat the problem.

“I mean, I work in retail, and that’s because retail isn’t the highest-selling business. Stores put the highest-selling business first…” one says.

“When I say when I become a store manager or own a clothing chain, I will always put plus sizes first,” insists a third.
