Heman Beckle can save 20,000 lives a year. He has been named Time Magazine’s Child of the Year. His breakthrough was the creation of a soap that could cure skin cancer.
Time magazine’s “Kid of the Year,” Heman Beckle is not only a little chemical genius, but he’s also a great idealist. Heman Bekele wants to change the world. “People no longer have to worry about paying thousands of dollars for treatment to survive.”He says in a video posted on YouTube. “A world of equity and accessibility is what I’ve been working towards for the past year, and I’m excited to show you that one idea can save millions of lives.”
This video is from the competition he won last year. He became America’s Best Young Scientist, earning $25,000 for his invention, a soap capable of treating and preventing skin cancer.
Heman Beckle combined three compounds to reactivate dendritic cells in the skin to fight cancer cells. “Ethiopia was my main inspiration for making this soap”Says a 15-year-old boy. “I was born in Ethiopia. I saw many people working for hours in the hot sun. I never thought much about it when I was a kid. But now that I’ve grown up and realized the effects of UV rays. Radiation, I wanted to act.”
Arriving in America at the age of 4, Heman Beckle secretly began his little concoctions at night with whatever he could find in the house. When he was 7 years old his parents gave him a chemist’s box.
Recruited last year by the prestigious Johns Hopkins University, Heman Beckle hopes to bring this soap to market within 5 years.
