apple Google is reportedly developing a device that combines an iPad-like display with a robotic arm, enabling it to perform tasks such as adapting to the user’s face during a video call.
This is one of several projects the tech giant has undertaken to create new products, according to Bloomberg. Reported Wednesday (August 14), citing unnamed sources.
Apple did not immediately respond to PYMNTS’ request for comment.
The report said that efforts to develop the desktop device, codenamed J595, have accelerated in recent months after it was approved in 2022.
Apple envisions the device as a tool for smart home management, video conferencing, and home security; it expects it to be controlled by Siri and Apple Intelligence; and aims to launch it by 2026 or 2027 for around $1,000, the report said.
The report said several hundred people are now working on the project.
While there were mixed reactions to the project among departments within Apple, the CEO said: Tim Cook He is seen as a supporter of these efforts, according to the report.
In addition to this device, Apple is also developing mobile robots for use in homes, AirPods headphones with cameras, and a giant foldable iPad, according to the report. The company is also considering developing smart glasses and augmented reality glasses.
Apple in February canceled its decade-long, multibillion-dollar project to build an electric car, moving several members of the car team to the company’s artificial intelligence team.
Top executives decided to end the project amid concerns about profitability and the large investment required for the project.
The company continues to invest heavily in research and development in other areas, including its plan to integrate generative AI across all of its product lines.
As PYMNTS noted, Apple’s AI features are set to take some time to roll out, and won’t be included in the initial rollout of new iPhone and iPad software updates.
Cook said during an earnings call on August 1 that Apple is working to integrate ChatGPT into experiences within iPhones, Macs and iPads and that the AI has “extraordinary potential.” He added that Apple’s intelligence will provide a “compelling” reason to update devices.
