Olympic Wrestling Semi-Finals and Finals – Day 4 – Live Updates

Americans Spencer Lee (57kg), Aaron Brooks (86kg) and Helen Maroulis (57kg) are competing for a spot in the gold medal finals after each winning two bouts in the first round. Former Michigan star Myles Amin faces Iranian star Hassan Yazdani in the 86kg semifinals.

Semi-finals

MFS 57kg: Rie Higuchi (JPN) Tek Aman Sehrawat (IND) 10-0

First period: Higuchi hits an armbar in the first 40 seconds to take a 4-0 lead. Higuchi hits a single for a two-point takedown and a 6-0 lead with 1:47 remaining. Higuchi hits a low blow, hits a headbutt, secures a takedown and an armbar for a 10-0 lead at 2:14.

57kg: Spencer Lee (USA) beats Gulumjon Abdullayev (Uzbekistan) 14-4

First period: Lee hits an inside header for a two-point takedown with 1:42 left. Lee scores a goal while wearing the harness, gets a takedown and closes out the match with three straight rolls. Uzbekistan defies the call. Challenge wins. The match continues and Lee leads 10-4 but Lee ends it immediately with a takedown and a spin to win 14-4 and book a spot in the gold medal final.

86kg: Magomed Ramazanov (Bulgaria) beat Aaron Brooks (USA) 4-3

First period: Ramazanov uses the time clock with 1:06 left in the first period. Brooks scores the first point due to a time clock violation to take a 1-0 lead. Brooks scores back-to-back goals with 11 seconds left in the first period to take a 3-0 lead.

2nd period: Brooks lands a single but Ramazanov blocks it during a long battle. No points. Brooks lands a single but Ramazanov lands a big kick and scores a takedown but Brooks fights off Turk who has his leg flexed hard. Brooks leads 3-2 after 1:06. Brooks lands a low single but Ramazanov throws him on his back and scores two as time runs out for a 4-3 win. Ramazanov earns a spot in the gold medal final after a last-minute injury.

86kg: Hassan Yazdani (Iran) beat Miles Amin (San Marino) 7-1

First period: Amin scores first goal on a pass out of bounds. Yazdani responds with two out of bounds, a dropkick and a spin kick for a 6-1 lead.

Second period: Yazdani scores a point outside the court with an underhand shot to lead 7-1. Yazdani loses a low shot but holds on to lead 7-1 with 1-3 minutes to go. Yazdani wins and will compete for a second gold medal against Ramazanov.

57kg: Tsugumi Sakurai (JPN) beat Helen Maroulis (USA) 10-4

First period: Maroulis attempted a layup and made it to take a 2-0 lead. Sakurai then held Maroulis to four points to take a 4-2 lead at halftime.

2nd period: Sakurai lands a single and scores at the end and moves to a leg throw. Sakurai scores another point and then stops Maroulis but gets no exposure points. Maroulis hits a reverse but Sakurai wins 10-4.

World Food Championships 57kg: Anastasia Nechita (Moldova) fall to Kexin Hong (China), 1:37

First period: Hong lands a single and gets the first takedown to take a 3-0 lead. Hong hits a trap armbar and Nikita counters on the second attempt for two points and puts Hong on her back before securing the final takedown.
