FORT WORTH, Texas — The Cleveland Guardians selected Oregon State center fielder Travis Bazzana with the No. 1 pick in Sunday’s Major League Baseball draft, choosing an enticing package of speed, defense and college prowess.
Shortly after the festivities began at the venerable Cowtown Coliseum at the Stockyards in Fort Worth, MLB Commissioner Rob Manfred announced that the Guardians had selected Bazzana, a 21-year-old Australian native who hit 28 home runs, stole 16 bases and posted a 1.479 OPS, to the Beavers in 2024.
The Rangers selected Bazana over speedy center fielder JJ Weatherholt of West Virginia, as well as several college power players. He is expected to move quickly through the minor leagues after drafting himself at the 1/1 position this year after a childhood spent in Australia playing cricket and other sports.
But he focused on baseball, and soon joined perennial star Jose Ramirez on the Cleveland team.
Bazina was a career pitcher who hit for a .360 average in three seasons at Corvallis and was named the Pac-12 Player of the Year. He joined Adley Rutschman (Orioles, 2019) as the only Oregon players to be selected first overall.

The 6-foot-5, 250-pound Jack Caglianone had another dominant season batting for the Florida Gators, hitting a .419 batting average with 35 home runs and 72 RBIs. He became the first player to hit 30 consecutive home runs in SEC history, leading Florida to its second consecutive College World Series appearance while setting school records for home runs in a single season (35) and a career (75).
The Athletics selected Wake Forest first baseman Nick Kurtz with the fourth overall pick, the second Deacon player to actually be selected.
#3: Colorado Rockies select Charlie Condon
After the Reds surprised everyone by selecting pitcher Chase Burns with the second pick, the Rockies swooped in for Georgia pitcher Charlie Condon with the third pick overall.
The 6-foot-6 center fielder led Division I with a .433 average and 37 home runs in 2024.
Chase Burns, a right-handed pitcher from Wake Forest, was selected by the Cincinnati Reds with the No. 2 overall pick. Burns, who transferred from Tennessee, has 8 wins, 1 loss with a 2.72 earned-run average and 162 strikeouts in 13 games in 2024.
With the first overall pick, the Cleveland Guardians selected Oregon State quarterback Travis Bazzana.
Bazana hit a .407 average with 28 home runs and 16 steals in 60 games with the Beavers in 2024 after hitting a .374 average in 2023.
