2024 Emmy Awards Nominations: Full List of Nominees

Emmy season is back, and Tony Hale (“Veep”) and Sheryl Lee Ralph (“Abbott Elementary”) will announce the 2024 Emmy nominations Wednesday morning, along with new Television Academy President Chris Abrego.

FX had the most nominated series this year: “Shogun” and “The Bear.” The Japanese drama series earned 25 nominations, including acting nods for Hiroyuki Sanada and Anna Sawai, while “The Bear” came in second with 23. “The Bear” stars Jeremy Allen White, Ayo Edebiri, Ebon Moss-Bachrach, Lionel Boyce and Lisa Colon-Zayas received acting nods.

Wait, aren’t the 2024 Emmys already in January? Not quite. Hollywood strikes forced the Television Academy to postpone the 2023 ceremony to January of this year — right in the middle of Oscar season. And now, just nine months later, we’re doing the same thing again.

With voting ending on June 24 and the 76th Emmy nominations announced on Wednesday, the second phase of the Emmy campaign is now upon us. And unlike last year, when strikes led to months of uncertainty and a lack of talent, this time the nominees are primed and ready to start campaigning again.

The Television Academy’s roughly 24,000 members made their selections from a pool of 229 total series submitted in the major drama, comedy and limited series/anthology categories in 2024 — down 33% from 309 last year. With fewer submissions, the organization’s sliding scale resulted in fewer nominations in many categories (down to five in the major comedy and limited series/anthology/TV movie acting categories).

Part of that decline is due to lower production volumes, as networks and streaming platforms have pulled back on original series. But last year’s strikes also delayed several productions — including shows that didn’t make the list this year but will return to the competition in 2025, like HBO’s “House of the Dragon” (and possibly “The Last of Us”), Prime Video’s “The Boys” and Netflix’s “Bridgerton.”

Meanwhile, this year saw only a few major changes to the Emmys’ rules. Perhaps the most notable was a last-minute change to the scripted variety format. With so few entries, the category was transformed into a “judging” competition, with panelists sifting through entries and the top two receiving 70 percent approval and a nod.

Because of its long delay, the most recent Emmy Awards in January scored record low ratings for Koducast. The event faced an NFL playoff game, which didn’t help matters, drawing just 4.3 million viewers. But ironically, this little-watched telecast has earned some of the strongest critical acclaim for an awards show — Emmy or otherwise — in years. Hosted by Anthony Anderson and produced by Jesse Collins Entertainment, the January event earned high marks for its nostalgic tribute to hit TV shows from the past 75 years, reuniting the casts of shows like “Cheers” and “Martin” while honoring classics by recreating moments from shows like “I Love Lucy” and “All in the Family.” That’s why Jesse Collins Entertainment is back to helm the telecast in September, too.

The 76th Primetime Emmy Awards will air live from the LA Live Peacock Theater in downtown Los Angeles on Sunday, September 15, from 8 p.m. to 11 p.m. ET/5 p.m. to 8 p.m. PT on ABC. The broadcast will then be available to stream the following day on Hulu. A host has yet to be named.
